A panel of leading AI thinkers from a range of disciplines came together for this fully online event hosted by The University of Southampton.
 

Attendees heard from Dame Wendy Hall, one of the UK’s leading voices in AI, as she explained why understanding AI is now essential for professionals across all sectors, not just those in technology. 

Dame Wendy was joined by a panel of experts from both technical and non-technical backgrounds, who discussed the growing importance of AI literacy as artificial intelligence continues to shape governance, the workplace, and everyday decision-making.

Dame Wendy Hall is a pioneer in computer science and global tech policy. She teaches and leads research in web science and artificial intelligence. Her work explores the social and technical impact of AI and the web. She advises governments worldwide, co-chaired the UK’s 2017 AI Review, and currently serves on the UN’s advisory body on AI.

Professor Pauline Leonard is Professor of Sociology, Director of the Web Science Institute and Director of the Work Futures Research Centre at the University of Southampton. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and of the Royal Society of Arts.

Pauline's research interests are in diversity, work and organization, primarily in the areas of organizational and technological change, gender, race, age and identity and skilled labour migration.

Thomas Irvine is Deputy Director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton, where he is also Professor and Head of Music. He was an Alan Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute in London from 2019-2023, where he directed the project "Jazz as Social Machine."
